But Sara, I don't even know you!

Sara El-Sayeh

Hello there, stranger on the internet,

I've been thinking of all the ways life unfolds for us. I'm sitting at the dining table I used to hide under as a child -- for sanctuary, for safety, for hiding... and I'm sending an email to a lot of people, there's some irony here and I'm here for it.

Bayo Akomolafe spoke about centering and fugitivity. Essentially, a fugitive doesn't want to be centered, they don't want to be seen, it in fact defies the whole purpose. To remain safe, to fulfill their purpose, the whole point behind being a fugitive is to not be seen. In some ways, I am a fugitive and I only allow a few people to see some aspects of me, I have to be very selective with who gets to witness me in my vulnerability.

And the invitation to be centered doesn't always land for me. I am a creature of the margins.

Are we building a village?

Yesterday, I was co-facilitating a lab where someone mentioned that we're building a digital village and it made me think of a few things. That space wasn't the easiest to hold, there was conflict, there was tension and these are things that I would typically have me hide underneath the dining table.

And I wasn't hiding. Hiding wasn't available to me. It's no longer an option at all times because now, for starters, I'm a parent.

Sometimes, the digital village is a microcosm and sometimes the digital village just isn't enough. I've experienced (c)osmosis with Katja in a digital village/school first and then we're bringing it to the village village.

To Aswan of all places, where villages (and temples) have actually been flooded when the Aswan dam was built. There's a lot of history and a lot of pain. And to be in constellation with the land is a brave thing, definitely not for everyone.

Could it be for you, though?

Two spots are already taken and we have space for THIRTEEN MORE!

But Sara, I don't even know you!

If you feel like you still need some time to get to know me - I'll be assisting in Aswan, then you can actually join me online soon for a Work that Reconnects workshop where we focus on capitalism. The work that reconnects is a framework/spiral developed by Ancestor Joanna Macy to help us move from despair and into active hope and inspired action.

I teach a decolonized or expanded version of the spiral where we also include social and self awareness, systems of oppression and liberation. I will be focusing on capitalism as a system of oppression. You can get my guidebook on that very same topic here.

And before I leave, I wanted to share this class I'm taking with you: Surviving the Future: a Deeper Dive starts January 5th

Love, Sara

I love to talk about collapse, imagination and liberation, poeticizing the mundane + contemplating belonging/othering under modernity. I'm a Work that Reconnects facilitator, Offers + Needs Markets facilitator + an energy facilitator. I'm currently working on a collection of essays on post-colonial mothering.
