I've been contemplating my creative self as part of the creative living spring challenge and I wanted to share some of my reflections on the kind of creative I think I am..
In fact, I'm not sure if I think myself a creator at all -- I'm more of a procrastinator, a “procrasteator” if you may.
The moment I sit down to write, I remember the work I’ve been putting off, the projects, the dishes, the laundry..
I think of all the things that would not qualify me as a creator and then try to prove to myself that I’m worthy of the title – or not.
the tabs I have open in my brain
Most of the time, something flows when I least expect it more times than I would like to admit. If there's a creative pattern that I exhibit, it's that.
I have a million recordings of writing workshops that I need to catch up on, a dozen drafts of manifestoes (and a rantifesto), intentions and claims of my artist title. I often introduce myself as a closeted writer, but I did get paid for writing a few times already, I think two or three to be very specific.
I think as a creator, I wait for reactions to test for whether my art has touched someone, made them think or dare I say, changed their lives? Has writing ever changed your life? Has your writing ever changed your life?
I know mine has saved my life.
There were times when it was so hard to imagine my life going on, and to be honest, there was no way it could have gone on down that trajectory so I wrote to imagine otherwise.
