In my last email, I spoke of an either/or mentality conditioned into us by late stage capitalism. And I hinted at the fact that it’s okay to also not want to do a thing.
In her book Caliban and the Witch, Silvia Federici outlines the history of capitalism. It’s a very rich book so rich that Megan Leatherman runs a whole course called Composting Capitalism where she talks about Caliban and the Witch.
I’m not here to talk about the book (yet) but rather point out something that sticks with me from the book. Capitalism came as a counter-revolution. When the farmers wanted down with the feudalist system, the ruling class came up with capitalism to give the workers some ownership and agency (or the illusion of ownership and agency)...
This piece of information coupled with living through the efforts of counter revolutionary movements in 2011 and the years that followed here in Egypt, I know for sure that the efforts of counter-revolution, as well as their resources, are immense.
They would do anything to turn the masses against any semblance of revolutionary thinking. That’s why they have made silos and ivory towers for us to hide in, they’ve given us high horses, too. Yes they’ve given us perspective but they’ve also given us isolation, seclusion and loneliness. This is when we are at most risk of becoming brittle, rigid and fragile and when we are, we’re scared — and when we’re scared we’re either helpless or so, so dangerous.
And what happens when we choose otherwise?
Well, to begin with, we need to thaw a bit. Because the freeze of capitalism has us so stuck that we can’t even begin to imagine otherwise.
